How to choose a good printer

It is not so difficult to figure out which printer to buy for home use, the main thing is to study the important characteristics that show the capabilities of the device and its ease of use.

Types of printers

All printers can be divided into several groups:

  • jet;
  • laser;
  • MFP (multifunction device).

Inkjet printers in their design use a special print head that moves above the paper and sprays ink onto the paper through special holes. Such models are most often colored and they are relatively inexpensive. The paint in them is in special cartridges, from 2 to 6. The more there are, the better the quality of the color print. Such printers have proven themselves well for printing photographs.

Among the advantages:

  • low price;
  • color print quality;
  • work speed.

Flaws:

  • cartridges cannot be refilled, and new ones are quite expensive, so the cost of prints is high;
  • low cartridge resource;
  • if the printer is left unused for a long time, the ink may dry out, resulting in the need to replace the cartridges or even repair the printer.

The principle of operation of laser printers is based on the fact that the magnetic head magnetizes the paper in a certain way, and then the magnetized areas attract the smallest particles of toner, which is ink. Such devices are black and white or color, but the latter are much more expensive, and the brightness is not very high, so that they can be used to print photos, so laser color printing is most often used to create advertising sheets and solve similar problems.

Advantages:

  • high cartridge resource;
  • high monthly loads;
  • there is a possibility of refilling.

Flaws:

  • the initial price of equipment is more expensive;
  • color printing is inferior in brightness to inkjet models;
  • quite slow print speed.

An MFP is a 3‑in‑1 printer, that is, it additionally has a scanner and a copier, but otherwise they are divided into inkjet and laser ones, with all the pluses and minuses that follow.

Printing cost

It was mentioned above that, on average, inkjet models have a higher cost per print when compared to laser devices.

At the same time, when choosing between specific options, it is necessary to clarify the cost of cartridges and their resource. Some manufacturers offer several versions of cartridges for their devices with a smaller margin, for example, 200 pages, or XL format, which allows you to get 600 copies.

Therefore, before choosing, it is worth calculating the cost of one print sheet for a specific model and, other things being equal, choose the one that turns out to be more profitable.

It is worth noting that inkjet printers have a subtype of printers with CISS, that is, with a continuous ink supply system. Their essence is that they do not use cartridges, but containers into which paint is poured. The resource of such devices can reach 5–15 thousand copies at one gas station, despite the fact that conventional inkjet machines can offer no more than 1.5 thousand copies.

Print color

Printers are available in color or black and white. If you need to print only texts, then there is no point in overpaying for color, so it is better to choose a black and white laser model. If you need to print drawings or photos, then the best choice is a color inkjet printer. If color prints are needed for work tasks, such as creating flyers, then it makes sense to overpay for a color laser model.

Connection method

The printer can be connected by wire or wireless. In the first case, either USB‑B (a special connector for printers) or LAN is most often used, which allows you to connect the printing device to a local network and access it from any equipment on this network.

The second method involves the use of a Wi-Fi network, which makes it possible to send documents for printing from any PC or laptop on the network, as well as tablets, smartphones and even cameras.

Laser

The first part of the rating is laser black-and-white printers, on whose side is inexpensive refilling and a high service life. This is a good choice for those who print documents frequently and a lot. In addition, their paint does not dry out, that is, you can use it periodically without the threat of equipment breakdown.

Sergey Yasenovsky I have been using a line of printers from Canon for more than a year. Prior to this, byd LBP6020. The main advantage is the low cost of refilling cartridges. The chips do not block the operation of the printer and do not require replacement.

Dmitry G. Compactness, weight, possibility of work without the socket.
Excellent print quality.
Lacquer coating of pictures, which not only protects the card from “fingers”, but also allows you to make “matte” prints.
The “invisible” printing of the date on the prints is just a separate delight.

Name hidden The quality of the print is not inferior to photographs of photo salons. Mobile, but the battery is purchased separately. For home printing in small quantities and users who do not want to understand all the details of photo printing, this is an ideal option.

2 Canon Selfie CP900

Ekaterina O. For a long time I chose a printer for home use. Since we print on a small scale, I decided to refuse an inkjet printer, since there is a problem of ink drying out. Sublimation printing gives amazing quality at a very reasonable price (about 12 rubles per photo).

The model works only with photo paper, it is connected by wire, has a slot for a memory card and a control panel with a 2.7‑inch display. Thanks to its miniature size, weight of 840 grams and the presence of a battery, it can be carried with you.

Thermal printers

Thermal printers are characterized by economical consumption of resources and fast printing. They are used mainly for professional purposes for printing price tags and stickers, as the quality is not too high. For home use, they are suitable for small format photographs, as their resolution is low.

Alina S. After updating iOS to version 13, the Instax Share app turned into a pumpkin and still does not work (see reviews in the AppStore). Support suggests reinstalling. The printer gives various errors and does not print anything. With the purchase it is better to wait until the solution of this problem.

Venirossa I advise everyone who likes square pictures, and does not want to always carry a paloroid with them

Sandro A little advice! When removing the packaging materials, you must remove the orange part before installing the cartridge. When you do this, do not pull the tape with great force, but lightly pull it, as shown in the illustration in the instructions, and the orange part will be removed.

maxim lobkov Did not take part in the setup. I connected it to the computer and while the browser was opening the computer itself installed all the firewood and gave out that the device was ready. Yes, and there are no problems with the connection on the wifi, and the pictures and tex prints perfectly.

Zloy D. If you stupidly need a machine for printing documents, then you can safely take it. And if you are chasing high technology, I do not advise

Sasha Gonchar We took it because of the covid mode of work from home. With a small load, it will become a good helper for you (20..30 sheets per day). I strongly do not recommend to work in the office, I will not take it out.
Overall, a very good MFP for the money.
