What are presets

These are ready-made set­tings for image pro­cess­ing.

On aver­age, pro­cess­ing one image takes up to 30 min­utes. This time is spent on the selec­tion of fil­ters, white bal­ance cor­rec­tion, expo­sure and oth­er set­tings. With ready-made pre­sets, pro­cess­ing speed can be increased by 3–6 times. As soon as you use a pre­set in Light­room, the set­tings col­lect­ed in it are applied. And there is an instant cor­rec­tion of the image.

In Eng­lish-lan­guage pho­to edi­tors, these set­tings are called “Pre­sets”. In Russ­ian — “Pre­sets” or “Styles”.

You can buy or down­load such com­bi­na­tions in the form of files. We will tell you more about what they are below. These files work only inside the appli­ca­tion itself. You can not apply them in any way to the pho­to itself. First you need to down­load the pre­sets into the Light­room pro­gram on your com­put­er or phone, install them. And only after that you can apply for pho­to edit­ing.

File formats

This is an exten­sion that the pro­gram “under­stands”. It is indi­cat­ed after the file name (after the dot). There are 3 exten­sions avail­able in total:

— DNG — this is the fin­ished image along with a set of set­tings for cor­rec­tion. They can be applied to your pho­tos. The con­ve­nience of such a file — you can imme­di­ate­ly see how the edit­ed pic­ture will look like (there is a pho­to exam­ple for this);

— XMP — a file with all ready-made set­tings, but only with­out a pho­to with an exam­ple;

— Lrtem­plate — the for­mat that was used until 2018. The pro­gram still rec­og­nizes it, but con­verts it to a more mod­ern one — XMP. This hap­pens auto­mat­i­cal­ly after load­ing.

Where to get ready-made combinations of settings

Paid

Buy from blog­gers, pho­tog­ra­phers, artists. Many peo­ple who cre­ate their own pre­sets are will­ing to sell them. Some­times style sets are includ­ed in paid tuto­ri­als.

Most often, blog­gers sell DNG files. They can be installed on a PC, but most often they are used in a mobile appli­ca­tion.

Where can I get free pre­sets for Light­room?

• Some­times they are hand­ed out by blog­gers, pho­tog­ra­phers. For exam­ple, it can be a pro­mo­tion when buy­ing a course, a raf­fle, etc.
• Down­load online. Some­times peo­ple share their work on forums for free.
• Use built-in. Light­room itself has ready-made Styles, but there are a lim­it­ed num­ber of them.
• Make your own.

How to add and save presets for Lightroom (Lightroom) on a computer (PC)

Where are Styles locat­ed? Find­ing them is easy. Need:

• go to Light­room
• select the sec­tion Devel­op / “Pro­cess­ing”;
• on the left side there will be a pan­el with dif­fer­ent tools. Among them you need to find Pre­sets / “Pre­sets” (may be called “Styles”, depend­ing on the ver­sion of the pro­gram).

If you click on this tab, a list with styles that are already installed will open. To check them, just hov­er over each. In real time, the image will change — this is an exam­ple of how the pho­to will look after apply­ing the style.

lrtemplate (XMP)

This method will help you install lrtem­plate (XMP) pre­sets in Light­room on your com­put­er. Need:

• open “Pre­sets”, as described above;
• click on the “+” sign next to the word “Pre­sets”;
• a small menu will open. In it you need to select “Import”;
• select the down­loaded file in lrtem­plate (XMP) for­mat;
• click “Import”.

That’s it, you have loaded a new style into the pro­gram. Where will he appear? In the gen­er­al list on the left. Usu­al­ly new down­loads are placed at the end of the list, but in some ver­sions of the pro­gram they imme­di­ate­ly appear in alpha­bet­i­cal order. Just click on it to apply it to the open image.

You can rename the file even after load­ing it into the pro­gram. Just right-click on it, select the desired item in the menu that opens, enter a new name and save it.

Decid­ed to upload a lot of files? Then you can sort them into fold­ers so as not to get con­fused. For this you need:

• click on any fil­ter with the right mouse but­ton;
• click on “Move”;
• click on “New Group” (to cre­ate a new fold­er) or on a fold­er that has already been cre­at­ed;
• save set­tings.

DNG

The pecu­liar­i­ty of this for­mat is that it con­tains not only set­tings, but also the fin­ished image. Because of this, it can­not be added via “Import”. You can open it only through Library / “Library”. Need:

• go to the “Library” sec­tion;
• move the file there in the desired for­mat;
• click “Import”;
• the pho­to with the desired style will be opened on the main screen. Now you need to open the “Pro­cess­ing” sec­tion, on the left side, select “Pre­sets” on the tool­bar;
• click on “+”, select Cre­ate / “Cre­ate”;
• give a name to the new style.

How to use presets in Lightroom

• Click on “Add pho­to” / Add Pho­to.
• Select the fold­er with the desired image, click on the pho­to itself.
• Wait until the image is loaded and appears on the work­ing screen of the pro­gram.
• Select the sec­tion “Pro­cess­ing” / Devel­op.
• On the left side, on the tool­bar, select “Pre­sets” / “Styles” / Pre­sets.
• Apply the desired one (by click­ing on it).

How to install presets for Lightroom (Lightroom) on your phone

This is not sur­pris­ing, because the appli­ca­tion has hun­dreds of pho­to edit­ing tools, a large com­mu­ni­ty and the abil­i­ty to share your cre­ativ­i­ty.

Where can I find ready-made styles in Light­room on my phone? Need:

• open the appli­ca­tion;
• on the main screen in the low­er right cor­ner, click on the image with a “+”;
• select the desired pic­ture;
• open this pic­ture from the library;
• in the bot­tom menu, the fourth icon is the styles you need. You need to click on them;
• 3 cat­e­gories “Rec­om­mend­ed” (arti­fi­cial intel­li­gence ana­lyzes the pho­to and selects the best fil­ters for it), “Pre­mi­um” (brand­ed fil­ter sets), “Yours” will open. Only the lat­est ones are free (there are more than 50 of them). Paid ver­sion price: 1499 rubles per year or 149 rubles per month (at the time of writ­ing);
• to apply the pre­set, just click on it and save the edit­ed pho­to.

How to open a new preset in Lightroom on a smartphone

Only DNG for­mat can be opened on the phone. It is saved in the Gallery as a pic­ture. Need:

• go to the Gallery, open the desired pic­ture;
• select an appli­ca­tion to open it. This fea­ture can be hid­den in the menu (usu­al­ly 3 dots or stripes in the upper right cor­ner). In our case (on Xiao­mi) — you need to tap on the screen. The bot­tom menu will appear. You need to select the first icon and select Lr from the list of all appli­ca­tions. After the down­load is com­plet­ed, a push noti­fi­ca­tion will come;
• go to the Light­room app;
• open the “Library” tab;
• click on the pre­set pho­to;
• click on 3 dots in the upper right cor­ner — a menu will open, select “Cre­ate Style”;
• name the style, check the box­es next to those set­tings that you want to copy. Click on the check­mark in the upper right cor­ner.

How to apply a new pre­set in Light­room? Need:

• upload any pho­to or choose from uploaded ones;
• click on the “Styles” tab on the bot­tom pan­el;
• in the “Yours” tab, the “User Sets” item now appeared. This is the fold­er with the down­loaded Light­room pre­sets. You need to go there and select the fil­ter that you pre­vi­ous­ly saved.

How to create your own preset in Lightroom

If you don’t like the pro­posed fil­ters, but you don’t want to buy expen­sive ones, you can make your own pre­sets in Light­room. Enough:

• open a pho­to (from phone or PC);
• edit it the way you like;
• save the result.

How to save style on PC:

• on the left side, on the tool­bar, select “Pre­sets”;
• click on “+”, select “Cre­ate”;
• name the new style and save.

How to save a pre­set on a smart­phone:

• after edit­ing, click on the 3 dots in the upper right cor­ner;
• select “Cre­ate Style”;
• name the pre­set;
• Click on the check­mark in the top right cor­ner.

After that, all cre­at­ed options for ready-made pre­sets will be saved in one list with those that were pre­in­stalled or down­loaded from oth­er sources.
