It infuriates when a traffic police mobile brigade slows you down and points to the radar. The mood immediately drops. Or when you learn about a new camera on the road from a beautiful photo in a letter, it also infuriates. To protect against such surprises, there are hybrid DVRs. In our rating, we will tell you not only about the best models, but also about what parameters are important for these devices.

What is the feature of hybrid DVRs

Combo or hybrid recorders are often referred to as radar detector recorders. This is a fairly well-established, but incorrect use of the term. It is more correct to call such models — registrars with radar detectors. The radar detector detects signals from radars and warns the driver in advance about their use. The radar detector, on the other hand, creates interference and blocks the operation of radar installations so that the driver can exceed the permissible speed with impunity. Radar detectors are banned in most countries of the world, including Russia. However, the use of radar detectors is also illegal in some countries, mainly European ones. In Russia, there are no restrictions on radar detectors.

In addition to the radar detector, many DVR models are also equipped with GPS-informer, or speedcam. This is a system that stores a database of the location of cameras, radars and other objects, up to speed bumps. At the right time, the speedcam will warn the driver of an approaching “threat”, but its effectiveness depends on the frequency of updating the database.

The combination of a radar detector and a GPS informer in one device helps protect against both active “threats” in the form of a traffic police officer with a portable radar, and passive ones — cameras with photo and video recording.

  • Combo recorders will be most useful for drivers who drive not only in the city, but also on the highway.
  • If you travel by car exclusively in the city, you will most likely only need a speed cam.

How much do registrars with “anti-radar” cost

Budget segment hybrid registrars is in the region of 8–10 thousand rubles. There are quite a few frankly weak models in this price range: with a GPS-informer without a normal separation by camera types, rare database updates and constant radar detector errors. Nevertheless, we picked up a few high-quality inexpensive devices.

Mid-budget segment is in the range of 10–15 thousand rubles. There are already a lot of registrars with a good picture and a well-developed radar part. More expensive models are equipped with additional features such as Wi-Fi and a second camera.

High end models cost from 15 thousand rubles. DVRs from this price range can be distinguished by powerful radars with advanced software, impeccable image quality, or an unusual form factor for such devices, for example, in the form of a mirror overlay.

What to look for when choosing a registrar with “anti-radar”

First, let’s briefly go over the characteristics common to any models (for more details, you can find them in the DVR guide). In our top devices with “anti-radar”, we will evaluate each model according to all the criteria described here.

The quality of video recording depends on many factors: resolution, lens, frame rate, etc. Photo: videoregistratoravto.ru

Video quality

First of all, you should pay attention to parameters such as resolution, frame rate and viewing angle.

Most hybrids shoot in Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) and Super HD (2304 x 1296 pixels). There are models with an even more advanced format — Quad Full HD (2560 x 1440 pixels). There are no hybrid 4K devices on the market yet, but there is not much point in chasing such a resolution in a DVR. In general, the resolution is not similar to the final quality of the recording, so good Full HD will sometimes be better than bad 4K. Thus, Full HD / Super HD without artifacts and with decent night shooting is enough.

The frame rate must be at least 30 fps, otherwise the picture may be blurry at night. The optimal viewing angle is 120–140 degrees (the roadside / third lane of the road enters the frame). A wider camera (there are quite a few models with a 170-degree lens among high-end devices) is a matter of personal preference, but you should not take something already 120 degrees.

In addition to resolution, frame rate and viewing angle, in our rating we will take into account the overall quality of the picture — clarity, lack of artifacts and legibility of car numbers (especially at night).

Frame

The dimensions of the device, the characteristics of the display and controls are important here.

On average, combo devices are larger than conventional registrars, so the dimensions of the model are especially critical. Too big a recorder can interfere with the view, so the smaller it is, the safer it is.

Also, for registrars with a radar detector and a speedcam, a display is important, which displays the types of “threats”. It is worth choosing models with a screen of at least 2 inches.

As for the controls, it is better to give preference to models with clearly marked and easily accessible elements. It is especially good if the main buttons are located on one side: it is easier to press with one hand.

The rating will take into account all these factors. However, a case that is too large or a display that is too small will result in a lower overall score.

Ease of attachment

The recorder (or rather, its bracket) is attached to the glass using ZM adhesive tape or a vacuum suction cup. Adhesive tape is more reliable, but you can’t change the place with it, unlike a suction cup. It is convenient if both mounting options are included in the package.

Magnetic fastening of the recorder to the bracket is the most convenient option. Photo: Nikita Perfiliev / market.yandex.ru

The best option for attaching the recorder to the bracket is magnetic. With it, you can quickly disconnect the device when leaving the car.

In the rating, we will take into account the reliability of fastening, the presence of a suction cup along with adhesive tape, as well as a magnetic fastening.

Additional functions

Using the built-in Wi-Fi module, you can quickly update the speedcam bases and conveniently set up the recorder via your smartphone.

Some high-end registrars have a permanent Internet connection with a connection to cloud services. In this case, the recorder can be used as a GPS tracker and view the location on the map, as well as connect to the camera remotely. This is a rather rare feature for combo devices, which are already more expensive than regular recorders.

The rear camera makes parking easier. There are models that come with a rear camera in the kit, and some just have an additional connector.

All these features will be taken into account in the ranking. Devices with no additional chips at all will receive 3 points. Whereas for the presence of Wi-Fi, the rear camera, or some other interesting features that we will talk about in the descriptions of the models themselves, additional points will be awarded.

Now let’s look at the parameters specific to DVRs with “anti-radar”.

GPS informer

Speedcam, or GPS informer, warns of police cameras, radars and other “threats” by drawing information from a built-in database. This system is similar to the one found in popular navigators for mobile devices. Unlike a radar detector, the effectiveness of a speedcam depends on the quality and timeliness of database updates. It is important what types of objects the speedcam warns about: it is necessary that the device be able to distinguish between speed cameras and lane departure control systems for public transport. The GPS module (receiver) itself is also useful for travelers who ride in remote places without communication and want to remember their routes.

Speedcam determines the location and type of radar or camera from a database. Photo: mobile-review.com

In our rating, the score for this item will be based on the accuracy and timeliness of database updates, the quality of the firmware, and the accuracy of the GPS receiver itself.

radar detector

It is almost impossible to determine the quality of a radar detector by a set of characteristics. Here it is worth focusing on the brand: the priority is manufacturers who have been developing radar detectors for several years in a row. It will also not be superfluous to look at the reviews of the owners of the model you are going to buy.

There are two main types of radar detectors: the horn antenna type and the more compact patch antenna type. According to tests, there is no particular difference in detection, while bulky horn antennas can also be found in expensive recorders.

An important selection criterion is the availability of signature technology. For the first time, it began to be used not so long ago, in 2016, but now signature radar detectors are in the lineup of almost all manufacturers. Signatures are “signatures” specific to the signals of each type of radar. Information about signatures is stored in the memory of the radar detector. Detecting certain signals, the registrar checks the database and concludes whether the signal came from the radar or it was interference from another device. Typically, the database also contains signatures of various types of interference. In this way, signature technology helps to significantly reduce the number of false positives.

A signature radar detector can operate in various modes, but there are almost always the following:

  • Classic “city” and “highway”, supplemented by reconciliation with the database of interference. In this case, the detector does not recognize radar models, but reduces the number of false positives.
  • Signature mode for the city, in which notifications are received only by radars present in the database (as opposed to filtering by “interference” in the first type), and all unknown signals are filtered out. This mode is good in combination with a GPS-informer.

Assessing the quality of a radar detector in our rating, we will pay attention to the presence of signature technology, as well as information that the detector did not work on a real radar or gave a false signal.

Checklist: how to choose a DVR with “anti-radar”

  • The body does not interfere with the view
  • Magnetic mount preferred
  • Shooting resolution — Full HD or Super HD
  • Optimum viewing angle: 120–140°
  • The GPS-informer is regularly updated (it is better to read about it in user reviews)
  • Other things being equal, a radar detector with signature technology is better

Radar detector — 5
Additional features — 4
Average score — 4.7

Playme P600SG is a versatile model with excellent video recording, an advanced radar detector and a speedcam.

The P600SG shoots in Super HD with excellent detail throughout the frame. Night shooting is on the level — from the headlights, the “glare” of the numbers is minimal, making it very easy to make out if necessary. At the same time, the camera works out well and daytime lighting changes.

The case is made of high-quality plastic, the screen is large, and the buttons are comfortable. A ball mount is used, with which, although it is possible to tilt and turn the recorder, it is ideal only for good roads and cars with minimal body vibration. On rough roads, the plastic mount results in a slight judder, which suffers from the clarity of freeze-frames.

But there are no complaints about the radar part. This is a signature detector with additional noise immunity, which practically reduces false alarms to zero. It effectively detects difficult-to-detect low-power radars. There are also no complaints about the work of the speedcam and the regularity of its updates.

In general, this is a device with an excellent combination of a car recorder and a radar detector without unnecessary options on top.

This flagship device of 2020 has collected the best practices of the brand. The Roadgid Premier is equipped with a 5‑megapixel Sony IMX335 sensor that shoots at 2304 x 1296 and 2560 x 1080 at 30 fps or 1920 x 1080 at 60 fps. There is a removable polarizing filter for the lens.

The viewing angle is wide 170 degrees. Compact body with a large 3‑inch screen (800 × 480 pixels) does not block it. A fairly convenient hinge mechanism is complemented by a magnetic attachment to the bracket.

The radar with signature technology produces single false positives, but when used together with a speedcam, this does not create problems. The GPS tracking module and the GPS informer work quite stably, the databases are updated regularly. The GPS database can be updated using a smartphone.

The recorder has a Wi-Fi module, you can install an additional rear camera.

TrendVision MR-720 COMBO is made in an unusual form factor for combo devices — in the form of an overlay on the rear mirror.

The model shoots video with a resolution of 2304 x 1296 and a bit rate of up to 36 Mbps. The result is a very detailed picture, but it will require a “fast” memory card. There are just two slots at once — microSD and SD for instant backup of videos. The kit also comes with a polarizing CPL filter that eliminates glare and reflections from the glass.

A high-quality Korean radar detector is attached to the body of the registrar on a magnetic mount. You can shoot it in the city using a GPS-informer, and quickly attach it when leaving the track. Unfortunately, this is not a signature radar detector, so if you use it in a city (especially in a large metropolis like Moscow), you will sometimes get false positives. However, the GPS-informer worked out very well: the bases are updated twice a day, and the receiver itself (GPS + GLONASS) keeps a stable signal.

A rear parking camera is connected to the registrar (without a video recording function), but there is no Wi-Fi module in the device.

PRIME is new in 2020 with a very compact (unlike the flagship Playme P600SG) body and magnetic bracket attachment. Power is supplied to it, so once again you do not need to remove the wire.

The device is attached to the glass only with 3M adhesive tape, however, there are additional silicone pads in the kit: that is, it is better to attach the adhesive tape not directly to the glass, but to a lining that peels off without leaving marks.

The registrar has a large convenient screen and all buttons are located on the front panel on one side — you can use it with one hand.

The device is equipped with a Sony IMX307 sensor with excellent sensitivity. The maximum resolution of PRIME is 2304 x 1296 pixels at 30 fps. The fast lens has a universal viewing angle of 140 degrees. The camera quickly adjusts from light to shadow and is good at night shooting. The kit includes a rotary polarizing filter that eliminates glare and also enhances the brightness of the colors in the recording.

The radar detector is equipped with a patch antenna (which is why the novelty is so compact), it recognizes all types of radars used in Russia, but there is no signature technology in the device. Perhaps that is why PRIME is several thousand cheaper than the flagship P600SG. IQ RADAR mode automatically changes the sensitivity of the radar detector depending on the speed of movement. The GPS-informer works properly, and the databases are constantly updated.

An optional rear camera can be connected to PRIME; there is no wifi module.

Among slightly cheaper devices, AXPER Combo Hybrid stands out. This model has a Sony Starvis IMX307 matrix, which can shoot video in Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixels) with a bit rate of up to 28 Mbps. There is a version of the DVR with an additional rear camera — then both are filmed in Full HD at 30 fps. For the better, the quality of video recording is also affected by a fast lens with an aperture of f / 1.4. At the same time, there are separate settings for night and day shooting, which is especially convenient.

The body of the recorder is very compact, although it has a large 3‑inch display. The device is attached to a vacuum suction cup or 3M adhesive tape. Unfortunately, there is no magnetic attachment to the bracket — a plastic latch is used. The rear camera is glued only with adhesive tape.

The GPS/GLONASS module is represented by a device from u‑Blox. Signal reception is stable, even in difficult reception conditions, such as driving under bridges. On the work of the GPS-informer in the network, you can find reviews that not all stationary cameras are represented in the database, while there are no problems with the release of updates. There are also a number of complaints about the implementation of the notification system: a lot of unnecessary words, slow notification.

The signature mode of the radar detector blocks false signals, ensuring a minimum level of false positives. The Anti-CAS system eliminates interference based on signatures.

A more budget version of the AXPER Combo Hybrid without Wi-Fi costs only 1000 rubles cheaper than the version with a Wi-Fi module. But we evaluated the model with a Wi-Fi module, through which it is convenient to update databases and firmware from a smartphone.

The compact body of the Mio MiVue i85 is made of high-quality plastic, but the design of the bracket turned out to be not very successful. The registrar records in Full HD at 30 fps with good sharpness and has a fully functional night mode.

The signature radar has standard modes for the city and the highway, and it also has the ability to automatically adjust the sensitivity, depending on the speed. On the net, you can stumble upon negative reviews about the speedcam database: users complain that it is not quite complete and does not always correctly notify about speed limits. We hope Mio will fix these shortcomings in future updates. In general, MiVue i85 is a good signature combo device in the budget segment.

We consider the Carcam Combo 5 to be the best budget hybrid recorder in terms of shooting quality. The model is equipped with an OmniVision OV4689 (4 MP) sensor, which shoots in Super HD resolution — the only 1296p recording in the budget segment. Camera viewing angle is wide 160 degrees.

This is a not too small recorder with a horn antenna and a built-in GSM modem. For fastening, a swivel bracket on the suction cup is used, but without a magnet.

The radar detector has false positives — this is not a signature model. There are also rare problems associated with early GPS triggering. At the same time, radar databases are updated regularly.

There is no Wi-Fi in the Combo 5, but you can insert a SIM card through the slot in the power adapter, and thus connect to the device via a smartphone to update the database. You can also connect to a cloud server, tracking the location of the car in real time. Also from the 5S version, the AV-IN connector remained: through it you can connect the rear camera. Perhaps, Carcam Combo 5 is the most advanced registrar in terms of additional functions in the budget segment.

If you choose the model in the budget segment that is optimal in terms of the quality of video recording and radar, then the most suitable option, in our opinion, will be Inspector Barracuda.

“Barracuda” shoots in Full HD (1920 x 1080), but without the ability to adjust the picture, which, of course, is not very convenient. As you’d expect from a budget model, the picture is a bit noisy in low light and at night. Camera viewing angle — universal 135°.

There are no special complaints about the body, the device is not too compact, but not bulky, despite the horn antenna. Above the screen is a visor that reduces glare.

The registrar is attached to the glass with a suction cup — the mount is quite reliable and does not rattle on uneven roads. There is no magnetic attachment to the bracket, but the quick-release plastic does not create problems during operation.

This is not a signature device, so sometimes false alarms of the radar complex are recorded, mainly in the city. Radar sensitivity is high, there is an automatic adjustment mode depending on the speed. The accuracy of the GPS / GLONASS module is at the level, the informant reports on all types of complexes, there are no complaints about the frequency of updates.

There are no interesting additional functions in the model, there is no Wi-Fi module, as well as the ability to connect an additional camera. This is a basic combo recorder that does its job, but you should not expect high-end model efficiency from it.

Carcam and Inspector Barracuda received the same average score, but the devices are quite different. If Carcam stands out for its picture and functionality, but its “anti-radar” can not be called ideal, then Barracuda looks more balanced in terms of video quality and radar part.

The Inspector SCAT Se with a 1/3‑inch OmniVision OV4689 sensor shoots in Quad HD resolution (2560 × 1440 pixels) at 30 fps. The shooting bitrate reaches 40 Mbps, so you will need a “fast” UHS U3 class memory card. High-quality recording is not affected by weather conditions and time of day thanks to the efficient operation of automatic exposure compensation. The wide viewing angle (170°) captures all traffic in multiple lanes, as well as signs, traffic lights and sidewalks. Distortion from the wide-angle lens is automatically corrected using the built-in software.

The body of the device is quite compact (105 x 70 x 39 mm), also because of the patch antenna. The pluses include a large 3.5 mm touch screen, but there are negative reviews on the network about its sensitivity.

The bracket is attached to the glass with a suction cup or adhesive tape, and the DVR is attached to it through a plastic latch.

The signature radar detector captures signals in various radiation ranges, including low-power ones, while cutting off false alarms. There is an IQ-mode of automatic sensitivity adjustment depending on the speed.

The GPS informer is updated weekly. There is an eMap electronic map database that shows speed limits all the way and activates, if necessary, additional alerts (stop lines, stop and parking prohibition zone control, etc.). At the same time, there is no Wi-Fi module in the model.

Among the cheaper registrars, the Slimtec Hybrid X Signature gives a really high-quality picture. The recorder shoots clear video in Super HD (2304 x 1296 pixels) at 30 fps. The OmniVision OV4689 matrix supports HDR recording with increased dynamic range, the picture is bright and saturated. Improves video quality and 6‑layer photosensitive glass lens.

Despite the horn antenna, the registrar has a compact body. The bracket without magnetic attachment is attached to the glass with a suction cup.

The signature radar detector with smart noise filtering technology works quite well, however, false positives sometimes occur on the track. The GPS-informer effectively determines all stationary points. Voice support is of high quality, meters are registered in the coverage area until it ends. However, rare updates of GPS databases — only 1 time in 3 months — can play a cruel joke. Therefore, it is better to rely on alerts from a radar detector.

The Roadgid Premier SuperHD and Inspector SCAT Se Quad HD can compete in picture quality (although Sony’s “roadgid” matrix looks like a favorite), while the Roadgid device has Wi-Fi, and the Inspector SCAT has an excellent radar part.

SHO-ME Combo No. 1 produces detailed Full HD video at 30 fps, but the clarity of the image from the oncoming lane is a little lame (slightly blurry picture around the edges).

Complete with fasteners, the entire body of the device is large, but there are no questions about assembly: high-quality plastic is used. Fastening is standard — a bracket with a suction cup and a plastic latch.

But the radar from the Korean manufacturer turned out to be what you need. The signature radar detector does not respond to signals from the sensors of the collision avoidance systems of other cars, it carries out digital signal processing. There is also a laser radiation detector 700‑1100 nm. The radar recognizes all complexes and laser meters at a distance of more than 1 km without false positives, thanks to interference filtering.

The GPS module is sensitive, but database updates do not always arrive on time.

Daocam Combo wifi is equipped with a Sony Starvis IMX307 matrix, which shoots in Full HD resolution (1920 × 1080 pixels) at 30 fps. Both day and night the picture is at a fairly high level, but there is no Super HD. Includes a CPL filter to reduce glare.

The body of the device is compact and comparable in size to a conventional recorder. In pluses, you can also write down a high-quality assembly and comfortable keys. Fastening to glass with 3M adhesive tape, while it is not swivel. On the other hand, the recorder is held on the bracket with a magnet, which is quite convenient.

An excellent signature radar detector recognizes both low-power systems and new complexes, while minimizing the number of false positives due to interference filtering.

The GPS module works accurately, there are no complaints about updates. Using the built-in Wi-Fi module, you can update the databases directly from your smartphone.

The device is equipped with a dual-channel stream — an optional rear camera with parking assistant is available, shooting in Full HD.
