In Ukraine, a system of automatic recording of offenses has been launched — to control speed, and later other points of traffic rules, there will be automatic cameras and radars. Even very careful drivers are not immune from violations: tried to drive at the pace of the flow, while overtaking accelerated a little more than allowed — you have a “letter of happiness”. The problem is not even to pay the fine, but what will happen if you don’t pay: the connection of the enforcement mechanism, executive proceedings, possible seizure of the car or property. The case when it is easier to prevent than to solve possible problems later. And the video recorder will partly help with this. How exactly? We tell in our material.

DVR with GPS functionality: why you need it

Speed cameras are stationary, their location does not change, they are installed in more dangerous areas and streets. Therefore, it is important to reduce the speed as much as possible in these places — and pay more attention to the road, and the risk of receiving a fine is lower.

Navigation maps and applications for smartphones or navigators will help control the movement of cameras: it is enough to enter the GPS coordinates into the device’s memory.

The coordinates of the location of the cameras are available on various information sites and even on the website of the Police of Ukraine: no one hides these points. After all, the main goal of the Police is not to fine and collect more money, but to reduce the speed of cars in dangerous areas to reduce the risk of road accidents.

Ukrainian drivers often prefer the “one function — one device” approach. Confirmation of this is the constant popularity of video recorders. And what if you combine the recorder’s functions — video recording, photo shooting, and GPS capabilities?

With the help of a GPS receiver, you can control the speed of the car and its location. And to warn the driver about approaching the specified point, where the stationary speed control camera is located.

The idea is not new: the first recorders with GPS functionality appeared on the Ukrainian market 7–8 years ago. And more than two years ago, a review of Rayberry video recorders with support for similar functionality (Rayberry D4 model) was published on the ITC.ua website.

Thanks to GPS technology, the video recorder implements several functions at once:

  • It warns in advance (300–500 meters) about control points — speed cameras, surface irregularities, narrowing of the road.
  • Constantly monitors the speed of movement, even without taking into account the location of the cameras. If you set the permitted 50 km/h in the city and exceeded the permitted limit, the recorder will beep alarmingly.
  • Some models, in connection with an additional application, record and broadcast the route of movement on an online map of the city or region. You can trace the entire path of the car, see the speed of movement, the picture around, even the indicators of the G‑sensor (overload/impact).

Depending on the model, the device may support some or all of the above functions. Today there are quite a few models with GPS support, and we have selected the Top 10 most interesting devices with great functionality, a well-known name, high quality and a good balance of features and price.

Thanks to it, the process of installation or dismantling is simplified as much as possible, there is no need to switch the power cable — it is already connected to the bracket.

Another recorder in the price range up to $150. In addition to the unusual design in the style of “tube TV from the past”, the video recorder Playme UNI is distinguished by a wide functionality “from the future”.

If you can be ready for the motion sensor, Wi-Fi support, G‑sensor (for such money), then the traffic control function is a nice and important addition for drivers who often have to drive long distances and there is a risk of falling asleep at the wheel .

Of course, the device supports GPS functionality, but it is implemented through a separate GPS module.

Prestigio RoadScanner 700GPS

This baby Prestigio RoadScanner 700GPSGR is an affordable representative of combo devices. Its compact body accommodates a rich set of possibilities.

First of all, we are interested in the warning about cameras, for this in this model the radar detector (operation in the K, X, Ka and La ranges is ensured) and the GPS navigator with preset coordinates bases are responsible for this. They perfectly complement each other, while the price of such a solution is very attractive.

With the video recording function, everything is also in order here — shooting in SuperHD resolution with a very wide viewing angle. Thanks to the wide dynamic range (WDR), dazzling light sources (headlights at night and the sun at bright noon) will not spoil the picture.

The model shoots video with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, there are row control functions and warnings about approaching the car in front, impact and motion sensors, support for the GPS function — speed control and warnings about set points.

If the warning function of stationary GPS-based radar cameras will help in the city, then the radar detector will be needed on the highway or to warn of temporary speed control posts. There are not many similar all-in-one devices, but you can find them.

One of the features of the Playme P600SG is the ability to record video with a maximum resolution of 2304x1296 pixels, in which it exceeds the capabilities of the Neoline X‑COP 9000C model.

SilverStone F1 Hybrid S‑BOT

The SilverStone F1 Hybrid S‑BOT DVR is a stylish combo device and the choice of those who want to get the maximum possible protection from police speed control devices.

On the “first line of defense” is a radar detector that works in the K, Ka, X and La (laser) ranges and uses a constantly updated base of radar signatures of the CIS countries.

It includes the so-called Z‑signatures (for example, automatic door signals, various industrial transmitters), to protect against false alarms. Digital signal processing using DSP is provided. 5 preset sensitivity settings are available — 3 city, SMART and highway.

The GPS receiver is responsible for the “second line” of protection and the database with the coordinates of radars and cameras is loaded. The radar detector cannot always catch their signal (modern models usually make little noise), so such insurance will not be superfluous.
